Why can't I just leave my leaves on my lawn?

While keeping a tidy lawn is important, there are plenty of other reasons to rake up all those leaves you've been stockpiling in your backyard. For starters, they deprive cool-season grass lawns (most lawns in the northern U.S.) of the one thing they need most: sunlight. Beyond that, they can even block water, nutrients, and a healthy air flow from getting into your grass's root systems.

What should I do with my discarded leaves?

There are a ton of alternatives to just tossing your stockpiled leaves in the yard waste container and calling it a day. Our suggestion is to chop them up, let them decompose, and use them as mulch for the coming winter. Sprinkle the mulch over your garden beds for protection from the cold, wet season and you'll have a healthier garden come springtime.

At Gardener's Edge, we've got you covered with everything you need to keep your yard looking great, year after year. For more tools to make life easier, check out our garden carts and wheelbarrows, heavy duty lawn tarps, garden grabbers, and the rest of our landscaping supplies.
